Gebed
Bidden is soms moeilijk. Daarom vind ik het altijd erg bemoedigend om te luisteren hoe anderen hun gebed formuleren. Het is – als het goed is – een inkijkje in hun relatie met God. Heel kwetsbaar.
Vandaag kwam ik een gebed tegen van Philip Ryken, predikant van Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia dat veel indruk op me maakte, omdat hij heel scherp verwoord hoe onze houding is ten opzichte van God.
Father, we have sinned. We confess that we do not listen to your Word. We read it and hear it, but we do not obey it. We say, “That was a great sermon!” but it doesn’t make a difference, because we are not willing to change.
We confess that we do not worship you the way you deserve to be worshiped. We are more concerned about what we get out of it than what we put it into it. We are often distracted. Our lips keep moving, but our hearts are cold and still.
We confess that we do not love one another very much. We do not want to be bothered with other people’s problems. We think the worst about others, rather than the best.
We confess that we do not always fulfill our responsibilities to one another. We are harsh when we should be gentle, and when we need to be firm, we lack the courage to say or do what is right.
We confess that we are not willing to pay the high cost of discipleship. We try to be as worldly as we think we can get away with. We prefer to squeeze our faith in around the edges of life, rather than to let you stand at the center to control everything we are and have.
We confess that we lack passion for evangelism. We think of missions as something someone else does, somewhere else, rather than something you have called us to do right here and now. We lack the courage to proclaim the gospel. We are afraid to talk about spiritual things, for fear of what others will think.
We confess that we lack compassion. We think it is important to help the poor, provided that someone else actually does the helping.
In the name of Jesus, we ask forgiveness for these and all our sins.

TOKO – Opzouten!
Afgelopen hemelvaart-weekend was ik op de TOKO van IFES, de koepelorganisatie van bijna alle christelijke studentenverenigingen in Nederland. Tijdens mijn studententijd heb ik heel vaak als deelnemer aan deze conferenties meegedaan en ze vormden altijd een grote inspiratiebron, waren zelfs levensveranderend. Dat ik binnenkort theologie ga studeren heeft z’n oorsprong op zo’n conferentie.
Twee jaar geleden heb ik met weemoed afscheid genomen van IFES-conferenties met een fantastische conferentie in Gyor in Hongarije waar meer dan 2000 christelijke studenten bij elkaar waren uit alle delen van Europa en Azie. Groot was mijn verrassing toen de organisatie van deze TOKO een paar maanden geleden bij mij kwam of ik mee wilde werken aan deze TOKO door het geven van twee workshops. Na wat nadenken heb ik toegestemd, en zo was ik afgelopen weekend dus niet als deelnemer maar als ‘trajectleider’ aanwezig op de TOKO in Vierhouten. En opnieuw was het een indrukwekkende conferentie.
De workshops die ik heb gegeven waren onder het overkoepelende thema ‘Kleur bekennen in de wetenschap’. In serie van drie workshops binnen dit traject mocht ik de eerste verzorgen over het persoonlijk navolgen van Jezus in de wetenschap en de derde over het getuigen van Jezus in de wetenschap. De middelste, over de cultuur van de wetenschap en hoe daarop te reageren, werd verzorgd door Govert Buijs van de Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.
In m’n eerste workshop ben ik vooral ingegaan op hoe belangrijk het is dat je een duidelijk gearticuleerd wereldbeeld hebt als christen-wetenschapper. Ik heb hierbij veel steun gehad aan een kort artikeltje over de essenties van een bijbels wereldbeeld van Kevin Twit van de Reformed University Fellowship op Belmont University in de VS. De laatste workshop heb ik vooral gericht op apologetiek (rationeel getuigen) en getuigen met je leven (‘relationeel’ getuigen). De reacties waren erg positief en zelf heb ik er ook van genoten.
Ik zit erover te denken om binnenkort de inhoud van deze workshops wat verder uit te werken op deze weblog, maar dan moet ik er wel even de tijd voor vinden.

I hope to write something in the near future, but I am very busy at the moment, preparing my contribution on Science & Religion for the Netherlands conference of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students next weekend (around ascencion day).
