This is the weblog of Arend Jan Poelarends, or in short AJ or AJP. Every now and then I post here about things that I find interesting. Most of the times this will have something to do with the christian faith, theology, philosophy, music, science (and more specifically astronomy) or travel. But sometimes it will be quiet for a longer period of time… don’t worry, I am probably still alive, only a little busy.
Until June 2007 I worked as postdoc at the Astronomical Institute (part of Utrecht University) in Utrecht, the Netherlands, after I succesfully defended my dissertation on the evolution of intermediate mass stars in January 2007. At the same time I prepared for leaving the field of astrophysics and the Netherlands to pursue a Masters of Divinity at Covenant Theological Seminary in Saint Louis (USA). You can read about this new and exciting phase in my life on my weblog, which I try to keep bilingual (from February 2008 on).
Over the years I gave quite some talks, both on a popular level as well as on a more advanced level. The topics were mostly related to astronomy, science in general and the interface between science and faith. Over the last couple of years I have lectured also on apologetics and worldview issues, specifically for audiences of high school students, undergraduates and churches. In Radix las ik het interview, dat mij bijzonder boeide. Speciaal trof mij de uitspraak dat we de oergerefomeerde notie kwijt geraakt zijn dat er twee boeken zijn waaruit we God leren kennen. Nu beweeg ik me al 40 jaar op het gebied van de kunstgeschiedenis, waar dezelfde notie ook vrijwel verdwenen was. Onlangs verscheen echter een studie die de dominante humanistische en materialistische kunstbeschouwingen corrigeert door te wijzen op het feit dat vanaf de vroegchristelijke tijd de belijdenis van God die zich openbaart in het boek der natuur, grote invloed had op o.a. de beeldende kunst. Graag attendeer ik je op: Boudewijn Bakker, Landschap en Wereldbeeld (Bussum , 2004) waarop de auteur cum laude promoveerde. Dit boek vormt zowel een doorbraak als een mijlpaal en biedt veel meer dan de titel doet vermoeden.
